Insects
Insects, while important to our ecosystem, can be quite a nuisance if they decide to make a home inside your home. Reclaimed wood can be a habitat for a few types of wood burrowers including termites, carpenter ants, bark and cambium munchers, and powder post beetles. Let’s discuss how to deal with these six-legged invaders.
While hewing this beam, the author exposed a colony of carpenter ants.
Termites
Termite-infested reclaimed wood is mostly a problem for softwood post-and-beam timbers. You’ll typically find them in barns and old houses’ sill beams placed on or close to the ground. Termites flourish in hierarchical colonies – this means that if during the process of reclaiming the wood the colony was separated from its monarch, the individual termites will perish. In addition, if we dry and heat up the lumber we will most likely eradicate the termites. The same approach works when used for carpenter ants.
